Vegan Diet or Plant Based Diet?
When it comes to diet or lifestyle choices, many people are choosing to label themselves either ‘vegan’ or ‘plant-based’ by reducing or eliminating animal products entirely. As a result, there is an increasing choice of plant-based/vegan products available in shops, restaurants, and even fast food chains (but don’t get us started on Vegan KFC!)
But what’s the difference between a plant-based diet and a vegan diet? Let’s explore this in a bit more detail…
The Difference Between Vegan & Plant Based
First things first, let’s determine whether we are talking about diet, or a broader lifestyle choice. Veganism, or the practice of being vegan was created around 75 years ago by animal rights advocate, Donald Watson, and is used to describe a person who avoids using animals for ethical reasons. This could be for food, clothing, or any other animal products, and not necessarily a solely dietary choice. You could argue that ethics and animal welfare come first, rather than other benefits of being vegan.
What Do Vegans Eat?
Veganism includes a plant-based diet, of course, by excluding animal-derived foods such as; eggs, meat, fish, poultry, cheese and other dairy products. Instead a vegan diet consists of plant foods like; fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that the world of nutritional science introduced the term, ‘plant-based diet’ to define a low fat, high fibre, vegetable-based diet that focuses on health and not ethics.
Is Vegan or Plant-Based Better For You?
There are minute differences between the two, making it almost impossible to say one way or the other. It is fair to say that being ‘plant-based’ typically refers to diet alone, whereas being ’vegan’ reaches beyond diet, and refers to products and lifestyle decisions.
